Session 2 Discussions

Resistance by faculty to teach online courses. thoughts behind:

  • need clear understanding of the ID components for online as well as how to teach (pedagogy) online.
  • feel won't be supported with design, with tech skills, with being able to use materials online
  • feel not sure they will be able to teach online well.
  • fear of the unknown of what it means to be teaching online.
  • faculty may not know what it looks like to teach online

Big Issues

  • faculty are asked to convert to online environment without being supported with an online designer or training.
  • need confirmation (Affirmation?) they are moving in right direction
  • concerns over accessibility. making sure all online courses are 508 compliant.
  • class size. faculty have been told online classes will be up to 30 students.

Needs by faculty to transition to online environment:

  • Need immersive experience learning methods to engage students in online environment.
  • needs to be enjoyable, approachable, participatory
  • target online teaching training to specific groups/departments/program needs, yet there are advantages to new perspectives from those outside the 'group'. Step 1 might be to work with similar 'group', then expand to include other groups as skills / development evolves.
  • support for ID and methods for courses online
  • need model of what a good online course looks like
  • support, support, support
  • demonstration / video / access to what is happening in K-12 classroom. Faculty may not know what classroom teachers are doing with technology in the K-12 environment.
